A Little Boy's Garden

I am addicted to Craig's List.  They say that admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.  I have a glorious glorious problem that results in wonderful used items for an affordable price. :)  Remember in my last post when I mentioned that Johnny was really enjoying those toy flowers that we bought him and I wanted to figure out some sort of play garden for him to mimic the urban garden I will be planting on our patio?  Well, about ten minutes after publishing that post, I was perusing my favorite site when I saw about five posts for a toy garden set - one that I had never seen before.  It was like it was meant to be.  Except that the first four I saw were going for $45-50 (I'm just going to say it now: there are a lot of people on this site that like to try and sell used things for an exorbitant amount of money - sometimes for about what they paid new or more; these people are ridiculous)!!!  Not likely that I would pay that amount for a plastic garden toy for Johnny...until I saw the last post for the same item for only $15 and in great shape.  Now that I could do.  :)

After driving to Littleton during horrible rush hour traffic, bypassing an RV that was stalled in the middle of an on ramp, and traversing through heavy construction, we finally arrived in the parking lot where we were meeting the woman.  The woman was really nice and had two adorable little kids.  We made the exchange and we were good to go.

We set it up in Johnny's room (I'm not sure where we will put it permanently yet) and he immediately started to play with it.  He loves it:

The best part of this toy is that it has a garden with little root vegetables that come out, flowers, birds, and a mailbox that opens and closes.  Johnny really loved the little vegetables and I love that I'll be able to make him little letters to go with the mailbox. :)  He already has little play gardening tools from last year, but I hope to get him a little kid-sized watering can and I also have plans to knit or sew some other play vegetables & flowers for his little garden.  We're both ready for spring and planting gardens!! :D

***Also, when we got home from picking this toy up, we found that our kitchen island had been delivered to the main office, so after a wonderful little trip of carrying an enormously heavy box up three flights of stairs, we now have it in our apartment.  We (John will build, I'll supervise) will put it together either tonight or tomorrow and once it is put together, I will most certainly be taking pictures and posting it on here.  I'm so excited to finally have some more counter space and to fill up the awkwardly large tile space in our kitchen! :)  Hope everyone is enjoying their Thursday!!  I'm now going to go play with Johnny and show him how to plant carrots...

Oh cute!! I've never seen anything like that before! Eleanore has a big plastic play house out in the garage. We'd keep it in the front yard if they didn't do yard inspections on base, but because it can't be "out and showing", we keep it right behind the garage door, so that all we have to do to play in it is open it up. We got it at a garage sale when she was little, for only $60, which is still A LOT, but when they go for $300 brand new... its not so bad, right? Charlie has taken to it recently, and anytime we go outside he heads straight towards it. I really want to get the kids some kind of similar play structure for inside, but I haven't decided what yet. And where would I put it? Gah.
